How members of Congress report stock trades: the House periodic transaction report
Under the STOCK Act, members of the US House must report a trade in a stock, bond or other security worth more than $1,000 on a periodic transaction report, or PTR. It is due within 30 days of learning of the trade and no later than 45 days after it, and it covers trades by the member's spouse and dependent children too. The report gives the amount as a range, such as $1,001 to $15,000, and never the exact sum.

Every member's stock trades, member by member →
The whole dataset: Stock trades by members of the US House
What is left off the report
Trades in mutual funds and exchange-traded funds are not reported on a PTR, nor are trades in real estate, in the federal Thrift Savings Plan, or between the member, their spouse and their children. Stock splits are left off too. That is why a member's PTRs show single stocks and bonds and almost never a fund.
Why the dates matter
Because a member has up to 45 days, the date a trade is disclosed is often weeks after the date it was made. Reading both dates side by side shows how much of the price move had already happened by the time the public could see the trade.
Questions
House trade reports: common questions
How long do members of Congress have to report a stock trade?
Within 30 days of being told about the trade, and no later than 45 days after the trade itself, whichever comes first.
Why do the reports show a range and not the exact amount?
The law sets value bands for the report, from $1,001 to $15,000 up to over $50,000,000, so the member ticks a band and never gives the exact sum.
Are a spouse's trades included?
Yes. Trades by the member's spouse and dependent children over $1,000 must be reported too.
Do senators file the same report?
Senators file their own periodic transaction reports with the Secretary of the Senate. This page and the dataset cover the House.
Are ETF trades reported?
No. Trades in mutual funds and exchange-traded funds are excluded from periodic transaction reports.
